Verification of skills takes place with the same test aimed at selection for enrollment, the TOLC-E. They are considered positively verified if in the areas of TOLC-E related to verbal comprehension, logic and mathematics the scores indicated in the selection notice are reached.
For more information on the structure and content of the test see the CISIA website at https://www.cisiaonline.it/en/area-tematica-tolc-economia/struttura-della-prova-e-syllabus/
- Level B2 English Language
The B2 level of English language can be attested by a language certification earned no more than 3 years ago (2 for TOEFL) and recognized by the University (see the list at https://www.unimi.it/sites/default/files/2023-05/certificazioniENG_mag2023.pdf). The certification must be uploaded to this page http://studente.unimi.it/uploadCertificazioniLingue; uploading can be done at the time of matriculation or later.
Those who do not have a recognizable certification must compulsorily take the Placement Test provided by the SLAM University Language Center after matriculation; the test can only be taken during the first year of the course, from October to December.
More information is available at https://www.unimi.it/en/study/language-proficiency/placement-tests-entry-tests-and-english-courses
Additional educational requirements and ways to make up OFAs
- Verbal comprehension and logic-mathematics
The achievement of a score lower than that indicated in the selection notice in the areas of verbal comprehension and logic-mathematics results in the assignment of additional educational obligations (OFAs) to the admitted male and female students. The fulfillment of OFAs related to these areas is a requirement for taking all exams in the years following the first.
The University organizes specific training activities for the remediation of skills necessary for the fulfillment of OFAs.
More information is available at OFA Online https://ofaonline.unimi.it/ and on the OFA Recovery page https://sie.cdl.unimi.it/it/insegnamenti/recupero-ofa
- English Language
In the absence of certification of the B2 level of English or in case the Placement test result is less than B2, an OFA of English language is assigned.
To fulfill the OFA, it is necessary to take courses provided by the SLAM Center to achieve B2 level and pass the relevant final tests. SLAM courses require compulsory attendance; it is possible to apply for a full or partial exemption from the obligation to attend courses aimed at achieving the B2 level only for duly certified health reasons or for work reasons attested through a contract/statement from the employer.
Those who do not take the Placement Test by December or do not pass the final test of the SLAM course within 6 attempts will have to take a certification privately in order to fulfill the OFA. The fulfillment of the English OFA is a requirement to take the mandatory English for international relations exam in the second year.

In light of its international focus, the Bachelor degree programme in International Sciences and European Institutions provides enrolled students with a wide range of options, in terms of foreign institutions where they may follow part of their studies and take exams, in the context of the Erasmus+ Programme. Erasmus+ funded scholarships may be available.
The Department of International, Legal, Historical and Political Studies (DILHPS) - which is responsible for the Bachelor degree -collaborates with several partner Universities in France, Spain, Eastern Europe (mainly the Czech Republic, Poland and Lithuania), as well as in Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Norway and the United Kingdom. Moreover, thanks to specific arrangements with some Turkish Universities, students will have the chance to experience life and study in a stimulating cross-cultural environment.
While staying in a partner University, students will be able to pursue their studies, in particular in the fields of International Relations, International and Comparative Law, Public and Private Law, History of International Relations and Politics.
The procedure for the recognition of exams taken abroad consists of two phases: a) before the student leaves, a 'Learning Agreement' will identify the courses that he is authorized to take abroad on the basis of the student's preferences and subject to the agreement of each Professor; b) upon the student's return, the University of Milan will recognize the exams included in the 'Transcript of Records' provided by the partner University and convert the grades received by the student.
