LM-46 - Dentistry and orthodontics
The Master's degree programme in Dental Medicine aims to prepare graduates who have a comprehensive scientific understanding, substantial clinical and professional training and the skills to holistically and empathetically plan and perform preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to deal with mouth, teeth and gum disease.
The Master's degree programme in Dental Medicine instils in graduates the importance of continuous learning and promotes the execution of clinical procedures that are supported by the best available evidence.
Learning objectives: basic subjects provide the foundations for the development of medical and odonto-stomatological competencies, with which they are inseparably linked, with a view to shaping graduates into medical professionals who place care for human health at the centre of their work. In particular, graduates should have acquired:
- the scientific, theoretical and practical knowledge required for dental practitioners under Directive 78/687/EEC; the methodology and mindset necessary to undertake lifelong learning; the methodological bases for scientific research; an adequate degree of professional, decisional and operational autonomy gained through a course of learning characterised by a global approach to issues concerning the oral health of the healthy and of the sick, including with respect to the surrounding physical and social environment;
- the fundamentals of basic sciences, with a view to applying this knowledge in clinical practice; knowledge of general medicine from a physiopathological and clinical perspective; the ability to detect and critically assess information concerning the health or disease of an individual's stomatognathic system (also from a clinical perspective, considering the wider social and cultural picture), and to interpret that information in light of their own knowledge of basic sciences, physiopathology and systemic or stomatognathic diseases; the ability to clearly and empathetically communicate with patients and their family members; the ability to organise teamwork combined with knowledge of related issues, such as communication and human resource management.

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:
-practice the full range of general dentistry techniques with a view to the comprehensive treatment of patients, without generating added risks to the patient or to the environment;
- identify treatment priorities according to need and work with others to plan actions aimed at reducing oral disease in the community;
- understand the fundamentals of human pathology (having combined physiopathological and pathological studies with the study of clinical methodologies and diagnostic procedures to evaluate the most common clinical manifestations); understand the therapeutical, medical and surgical procedures complementary to dentistry; understand the basic notions of care and assistance according to the principles of pedagogy, psychology, sociology and ethics;
- differentiate the medicines that are directly and indirectly associated with dental practice and understand the implications of pharmacologically treating systemic pathologies in relation to dental treatment, so as to adequately choose the best medicinal product for each patient;
understand biomaterials science insofar as it relates to the practice of dentistry;
- control cross-infection so as to prevent physical, chemical and microbiological contamination during dental practice;
- apply the full range of techniques for alleviating dental-related pain and anxiety (within the dentist's permitted limits);
recognise and deal with any medical urgencies or emergencies which may occur during dental treatment (e.g. high/low blood pressure, hypo/hyperglycaemia, allergic reactions, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, etc.);
- analyse the scientific literature and assess its outcomes from a treatment perspective;
- prevent and treat oral and dental diseases, being familiar with the related demographic factors;
- develop an interdisciplinary clinical approach, in partnership with other clinicians in the team, by gaining a heightened understanding of the rules and dynamics that characterise the group work of healthcare practitioners;
- examine issues pertaining to the general organisation of work and its dynamics, bioethics, dentist-patient relationships, patient education and community dental health, including by attending monographic courses and interdisciplinary seminars;
- communicate effectively with patients and educate patients in the best and most effective oral hygiene techniques;
- provide patients with sufficient information based on knowledge accepted across the scientific community when seeking informed consent to treatment;
correctly interpret legislation concerning the practice of dentistry in the EU country where the dentist is practicing, and provide care in compliance with the medical, legal and ethical regulations applicable in that country;
- understand their own limitations in patient care and recognise the need to refer patients to other practitioners for medical treatment;
- organise and lead the dental team, drawing on the full range of dental auxiliary personnel available to them;
- develop their knowledge in matters of multiethnic community development, in particular concerning variety and diversification of cultural and value-based aspects, including in terms of patient-centred care.
Graduates of the single-cycle Master's degree programme in Dental Medicine must also have attained:
- sufficient knowledge to have a qualitative and quantitative understanding of biological and physiological events; knowledge of the principles of molecular biological processes; scientific and behavioural knowledge underlying modern techniques in oral healthcare and dental treatment; a high degree of ethical and moral responsibility on the part of dentists for the care of patents both as individuals and members of the community; knowledge of applied computer science and statistics to the extent that they can become a useful tool for research and professional development; knowledge of the principles and indications concerning medical imaging and the clinical use of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection;
- an understanding of legal and deontological obligations within the dentistry profession.
Graduates of the Master's degree programme in Dental Medicine take up roles as self-employed dentists or as 1st or 2nd level managers in the Italian National Health Service (in accordance with Italian legislation).

Svolgimento di periodi di studio e/o tirocinio all'estero
1. Agli studenti che intendono partecipare ai programmi di mobilità dell'Unione Europea, ovvero Erasmus Studies e Erasmus Traineeship, è consentito frequentare all'estero secondo le modalità riportate al Comma 2.
2. La partecipazione è riservata agli studenti iscritti al quarto e quinto anno. Generalmente, Erasmus Studies prevede la frequenza per almeno un trimestre, mentre Erasmus Traineeship consente una mobilità minima di 2 mesi e massima di 12 mesi, secondo le modalità definite di volta in volta nel bando di Ateneo.
3. Gli studenti che intendono usufruire di questa possibilità devono presentare all'apposita Commissione costituita nell'ambito del corso di laurea magistrale una richiesta nella quale devono definire, prima della partenza, il piano di lavoro da svolgere presso l'Università, Istituzione o Ente straniero (learning agreement contract, LA, for Erasmus Studies o for Erasmus Traineeship), con il quale l'Università degli Studi di Milano ha stipulato un preventivo accordo di scambio. Sebbene il LA possa essere modificato nel corso del tempo, la definizione di massima dei crediti ottenibili, del tipo di attività da svolgersi all'estero e delle eventuali integrazioni necessarie al rientro in Italia, deve essere condivisa con la commissione prima della partenza affinché il LA venga firmato e inviato, per le opportune considerazioni, all'Università/Istituzione/Ente ospitante.
4. Le attività formative svolte all'estero nel quadro di programmi di mobilità studentesca dell'Unione Europea sono valutate al rientro, ricevuto il documento "transcript of records" (per Erasmus Studies) o documento ufficiale affine (per Erasmus Traineeship), dalla Commissione di cui al precedente comma 3 e riportate al Collegio Didattico per il riconoscimento ai fini del conseguimento della laurea magistrale.
5. Durante i periodi di permanenza all'estero per le finalità previste dal presente articolo gli studenti sono esonerati dall'obbligo di frequenza presso l'Università di Milano delle attività didattiche previste dal corso di laurea magistrale.

Attendance of all educational activities contemplated in the study programme is mandatory.
To be allowed to sit for the for-credit exam, students must have attended at least 67% of the educational programming contemplated for each course, whether single-discipline or multi-disciplinary course. The lead instructor for the programme will verify that the student has met the attendance requirements.

Enrolment
Admission into the programme is capped, at a national level, pursuant to Law no. 264 of 2 August 1999.
To be admitted into the degree programme, a candidate must have a secondary-school diploma, or similar diploma earned overseas and deemed equivalent.
The total number of admissible students is set each year by MUR Decree.
The admission test is a multiple-choice examination which is generated in accordance with a rubric generated by MUR.
The test is held on a date set by MIUR.
Additional learning requirements (OFA):
Students admitted with a total point score under 40/90 and with a score of less than 10/27 on those questions assessing a student's understanding of biology, will be assigned additional learning requirements (OFA). These prerequisites may be met through specifically assigned remedial work. Any failure to complete the OFA will make it impossible for the student to sit for the Biology exam.

To be permitted to sit for the English-language exam required for the degree programme, students must demonstrate a Level B2 English-language proficiency under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CFER). Such proficiency may be demonstrated as follows:
- by sending a language certificate, earned within three years prior to the date of submission, at a B2 level or higher (for the list of language certificates recognised by the University, please review: https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/competenze-linguistiche/placement-test-test-di-ingresso-e-corsi-di-inglese). The certificate must be uploaded at enrolment, or at some point thereafter, on the student portal: http://studente.unimi.it/uploadCertificazioniLingue;
- through a Placement Test, administered by SLAM during Year I, from October to December. Should a student fail the test, he/she must take the course provided by SLAM.
The Placement Test is mandatory for all students who fail to submit a valid certificate.

The tuition fees for students enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's and single-cycle degree programmes are divided into two instalments with different calculation methods and payment schedules:
- The amount of the first instalment is the same for all students
- The amount of the second instalment varies according to the ISEE University value, the degree programme and the student status (on track / off track for one year or off track for more than a year)
- An additional fee is due for online programmes
The University also offers:
- Concessions for students meeting high merit requirements
- Diversified tuition fees according to the student's home country for international students with assets/income abroad
- Concessions for international students with refugee status
