TAL (Theatre, Arts, Literature: International Studies in Intermediality) is a unique, interdisciplinary, open access Master?s Degree course, unique in the Italian academic landscape. The course has a strong national and international appeal and is designed to train professionals for careers in theatres, cultural research and study centres, and cultural promotion organisations, working closely with museums, libraries, archives and multimedia design agencies in Italy and abroad. The course integrates advanced methodological, theoretical and critical training in foreign literatures and languages (skills developed in LM-37 - MODERN EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE) with specialised qualifications in artistic disciplines, live performance and/or multimedia production (skills developed in LM-65 - PERFORMING ARTS AND MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION). In addition to offering courses in Italian and English, TAL also provides the opportunity to choose courses delivered in other major European languages and offers the possibility to complete Italian-taught courses in English. As the first interclass degree combining LM-37 and LM-65, it is also the first Master's Degree in Italy designed to equip professionals with advanced language skills as well as expertise applicable to research and cultural promotion. Specifically, TAL is designed to equip students with methodological, theoretical and practical expertise in the humanities, with a specific focus on live performance, art and literature. Through a structured two-year curriculum, the course aims to develop advanced communication skills in at least two languages, preparing graduates for leadership roles in the cultural sector.
Graduates will have the skills to enter national and international professional contexts. Their excellent command of English, Italian and/or another foreign language will ensure roles in cultural and artistic events.
Graduates wishing to continue their academic career will be well-prepared for doctoral programmes in linguistic-literary or performing arts disciplines.

- Career opportunities: specialist publishing houses, companies operating in the cultural and publishing industries (including multimedia), as well as in the field of linguistic and intercultural training for professionals.

- Skills associated with the role: in-depth knowledge of historical-critical methodologies for studying performance, expertise in the analysis and classification of sources, and theoretical and practical understanding of managing historical-theatrical heritage.

The degree program offers its students specific study program opportunities within the Erasmus+ Program.
For each destination, outgoing Erasmus students can undertake stays ranging from 5 to 10 months. During these stays, students can attend courses and take exams that will be recognized as an integral part of their study plan for obtaining their degree. They can also combine these activities with research for the preparation of their master's thesis, with the work being recognized within the credits covered by the Erasmus grant.
Each year, all the educational activities provided by the program are presented to interested students by the Erasmus coordinator of the degree program during a dedicated informational meeting. The academic data and information necessary for completing the Learning Agreement are also compiled in specific information sheets published on the Erasmus page of the Faculty of Humanities (https://www.unimi.it/it/internazionale/studiare-allestero/partire-con-erasmus/come-partecipare/erasmus-aree/erasmus-studi-umanistici).
For incoming Erasmus students, the degree program ensures the opportunity to attend all the courses offered in the academic curriculum and strives to accommodate the requirements of their home universities.
Additionally, many partner universities participate in faculty exchanges (Erasmus staff mobility), enabling our professors to spend time abroad and foreign colleagues to visit and teach at our institution.

Enrolment
Admission to the TAL Master's Degree is open to all students who hold a first level degree or equivalent foreign qualification, provided that, in addition to the degree, candidates meet certain minimum requirements listed below. Graduates with degrees in the classes listed below, as well as those in the corresponding classes of Ministerial Decree 509/99 or the Ministerial Decrees of 16 March 2007, may be admitted to the TAL Master's Degree:

In order to be admitted to the Master's programme students must also have a proven knowledge of English at a minimum level of B2. Furthermore, Italian proficiency at a B1 level or higher per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a requisite for admission.
Proficiency in English at level B2 or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required for admission.
The B2-level requirement will be ascertained by the University Language Centre (SLAM) upon admission as follows:
- Valid language certificate at B2 level or higher, issued no more than three years before the application date. The list of language certificates recognized by the University is available at https://www.unimi.it/en/node/39322. The certificate must be uploaded when submitting the online application;
- English level achieved during a University of Milan degree programme and certified by the University Language Centre (SLAM) no more than four years before the application date, including levels based on language certificates submitted by the applicant during their Bachelor's degree at the University of Milan. Verification will be carried out automatically, no documents need to be uploaded.
- Entry test administrated by the University Language Centre (SLAM) according to the calendar published on the website: https://www.unimi.it/en/node/39267/.
Applicants who fail to submit a valid certificate or do not meet the required proficiency level will be instructed during the admission procedure to take the Entry test.
Applicants who do not take or pass the Entry test will be required to obtain a language proficiency certificate recognized by the University (see https://www.unimi.it/en/node/39322) and submit it to SLAM via the InformaStudenti service https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/servizi-gli-studenti/segreterie-informastudenti by the deadline set by the master's degree programme (https://www.unimi.it/en/node/39267/).
Applicants who fail to meet the requirement by said deadline will not be admitted to the master's degree programme and may not sit any further tests.

This level is assessed by the University Language Centre (SLAM) during the admission process in any of the following ways:
- An Italian language certificate attesting to a B1 level or higher issued no more than three years before the date of submission. - Italian level achieved during a University of Milan degree programme and certified by the University Language Centre (SLAM) no more than four years before the date of admission application. In this case the process is automatic, the applicant does not have to attach any certificates to the application;
- Entry test administrated by the University Language Centre (SLAM) according to the calendar published on the website: https://www.unimi.it/en/node/46371. Those who fail to submit a valid certificate or do not meet the required proficiency level will be instructed during the admission procedure to take the entry test.
If the applicant does not take or does not pass the entry test, they must obtain, by private means, Italian language certification recognized by the University (list of recognized certifications at: https://www.unimi.it/en/node/349) and submit it to SLAM via https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/servizi-gli-studenti/segreterie-informastudenti no later than the deadline set by the degree course (https://www.unimi.it/en/node/46371). If the Italian language requisite has not been satisfied by said deadline, the applicant will not be admitted to the Master's programme and will not be able to sit for any further tests.
Methods of verification
The admission requirements will be verified by a special commission appointed by the programme.
Candidates who do not meet the above curricular requirements will be required to attend an interview on teams (see the notice on the programme website https://tal.cdl.unimi.it for the interview dates). All communication in this regard will be sent by the selection board to individual candidates by email.
For students with an overseas undergraduate degree, a specific and individual assessment of the requirements will be carried out, taking into account both the consistency of the previous academic background with the programme and the requirements listed above. All communication in this regard will be sent by the Evaluation Committee to individual candidates by e-mail.
To be admitted for the academic year 2026-27, candidates must meet all the admission requirements (degree, any individual exams, knowledge of English/Italian) by 31 December 2026. The admission requirements ensure that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to complete the programme (see Academic Regulations).
For students transferring from other Master's programmes, the guidelines set out in the minimum requirements above apply.

02 - 3 LABORATORY ECTS
As part of the TAL MA programme, students must complete 3 ECTS of laboratory activities. These are usually offered as small-group workshops, either in person or in blended mode, and more rarely online. Attendance is compulsory. The activities focus on thematic areas and/or methodologies closely related to the programme. Students may enrol in any laboratory offered by the TAL degree programme or the Faculty of Humanities, provided they meet the specified prerequisites for the individual activity.
Students are free to choose their laboratory activities from the list of laboratories offered in different academic years, which is available at the bottom of this page https://tal.cdl.unimi.it/en/laboratories.
As an alternative to a standard laboratory, students may complete Laboratory Substitute Activities (A.S.L.), such as workshops, seminar series, active participation in a conference, webinars and similar initiatives. A.S.L. activities may take place at any time during the year, including outside the standard teaching calendar. Successful participation allows students to obtain 3 ECTS, equivalent to a standard laboratory.

For students enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's and single-cycle degree programmes, tuition fees are to be paid in two instalments:
- the amount of the first instalment is the same for all students and is due upon enrolment
- the amount of the second instalment varies according to each student's ISEE University value and the degree programme in which they are enrolled
- for international students with income and assets abroad, the second instalment varies according to their country of origin.
