Medicine and Surgery, Dental Medicine and Veterinary Medicine: admission and filter semester
Pursuant to Legislative Decree no. 71/2025, as of academic year 2025/2026 applicants seeking admission to the single-cycle Master's degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery (LM-41), Dental Medicine (LM-46) and Veterinary Medicine (LM-42) no longer have to pass an admission test.
The new admission process requires applicants to enrol directly in the first semester, also known as filter semester, during which they will take three courses: Chemistry and Introductory Biochemistry, Physics and Biology, each one worth 6 university credits (CFU).
At the end of the filter semester, students will have to take the three end-of-course exams (there will be two exam dates for each course). Based on the marks achieved by each student in those three exams, the Ministry of University and Research will create a national ranking list, which will determine which students will be admitted to the second semester.
The enrolment period is between 10.00 on 23 June 2025 and 17.00 on 25 July 2025.
When enrolling, you must:
- choose one programme between Medicine and Surgery (LM-41), Dental Medicine (LM-46) and Veterinary Medicine (LM-42);
- select at least 10 universities where you would like to attend the second semester (please note that the first university must necessarily be the one where you want to attend your filter semester);
- choose an alternative degree programme in which you would like to enrol in the a. y. 2025/2026 in case you do not rank high enough in the national ranking to be admitted to the second semester. The alternative degree programme must belong to a related disciplinary area (L-13 Biology, L-2 Biotechnologies, L-38 Zoology, LM-13 Pharmacy and industrial pharmacy), or to one of the degree classes in the health professions, namely:
a) Health Assistance (L/SNT4)
b) Professional Education (L/SNT2)
c) Nursing (L/SNT1)
d) Orthoptic and Ophthalmologic Assistance (L/SNT2)
e) Podiatry (L/SNT2)
f) Audiometric Techniques (L/SNT3)
g) Audioprosthetic Techniques (L/SNT3)
h) Environment and Workplace Prevention Techniques (L/SNT4)
i) Cardiocirculatory and Cardiovascular Perfusion Techniques (L/SNT3)
j) Neurophysiopathology Techniques (L/SNT3)
k) Occupational Therapy (L/SNT2)
l) Orthopaedics Techniques (L/SNT3)
- select at least 10 universities where you would like to attend the alternative degree programme. Please note that the universities selected for the alternative degree programme can be different from the ones selected for the degree programme in Medicine and Surgery (LM-41), Dental Medicine (LM-46) and Veterinary Medicine (LM-42);
- if you have a disability at or above 66%, or a recognised disability pursuant to Law no. 104/1992, state that you hold the relevant disability certificate;
- if you are already enrolled in a degree programme belonging to the class LM-41, LM-46 or LM-42, or in one of the above alternative programmes, specify which courses you have already taken and attach the relevant attendance documents;
- declare whether you hold:
- an Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator (ISEE) equal to or lower than €27,948.60
- an Equivalent Asset Situation Indicator (ISPE) equal to or lower than €60,757.87

Students holding a foreign degree can enrol in the filter semester by following the relevant procedures for international students. In any case, enrolment must be made within the applicable deadlines. Non-EU students are also required to apply for a student visa on Universitaly.
Enrolling in the filter semester
A link to the online form to enrol in the filter semester will be posted here on 7 July 2025.
During the filter semester, students will attend three 6-credit courses — Biology, Chemistry and Introductory Biochemistry, and Physics — for a total of 18 CFU. Course syllabi are available at the top right of this section.
Courses start on 1 September and attendance is mandatory. Teaching delivery modes (face-to-face, online or blended) are still to be decided. Any updates will be posted on this page as soon as possible.
At the end of the filter semester, students will be required to fill out a satisfaction survey for each course, so as to evaluate the quality of teaching.
The three end-of-course exams will be held one after the other, on the same dates and at the same time in all universities that have organised the filter semester. There will be two exam dates:
- 20 November 2025 at 11:00
- 10 December 2025 at 11:00
Each exam will last 45 minutes, with a 15-minutes break between one exam and the other.
Each exam consists of 15 multiple-choice questions and 16 sentence completion questions, for a total of 31 questions.
Exams are graded on a scale of thirty (30), plus 1 point for honours (lode). For the purpose of the ranking, points are awarded as follows:
- 1 points for each correct answer;
- 0 points for no answer;
- minus 0.25 points for each wrong answer.
A maximum of 93 points can be awarded for the three exams together.
To access the University online services, please use the credentials you received after your enrolment.
Check your University email on a regular basis: that is where you will receive all official communications
If you fail any of your exams on the first date or decide not to accept the grade obtained, you will be able to re-sit your exam(s) on the second available date.
The national rankings for admission to the degree programmes in Medicine (LM-41), Dental Medicine (LM-46) and Veterinary Medicine (LM-42) will be based on the overall score achieved by each student in the three end-of-course exams.
Only students who obtain a minimum score of 18/30 in each exam will be included in the rankings. The ranking will determine who can matriculate into the second semester, based on the number of places available in each university and according to the preferences expressed by each student.
If you are admitted to the second semester of the degree programme in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan, when matriculating you will be required to choose the hospital/campus where you will attend your courses: Policlinico hospital, Vialba hospital or San Paolo hospital.
If you obtain a score equal to or above 18/30 in the three end-of-course exams, but fail to rank high enough to access the second semester of your chosen medical degree, you may matriculate into the second semester of the alternative degree programme that you indicated on Universitaly. In this regard, please keep in mind that limited-enrolment programmes can extend the number of places available up to 20%, so you must rank high enough in the national ranking to be included in this percentage. Students who matriculate in alternative degree programmes will be granted credit recognition of the three exams taken during the filter semester.
If you are not admitted to the second semester of your chosen medical degree, nor of the alternative degree programme, you can:
- repeat the filter semester up to three times, including in non-consecutive academic years;
- enrol in another degree programme, provided there are still places available and you meet the admission requirements (e.g. you have passed the TOLC test). Credit recognition will be evaluated by the competent bodies of the degree programme, upon request.
