Master programme
LM-37 R - Lingue e letterature moderne europee e americane
The aim of the Master's degree programme in Languages and Literature for Education, Criticism and Translation is to ensure that graduates acquire an extensive theoretical and methodological knowledge of one or two foreign languages and their literature (at least one language and literature must be European). In the case of French, English, Portuguese and Spanish languages and literatures, students will also have the opportunity explore their evolution outside European borders.
The programme leaves a wide margin for personalisation and allows students to build a coherent study plan, combining foreign languages and literatures with other fields of humanities.
Students are required to submit their study plan starting from Year I, and will have to choose one of the learning tracks (curricula) offered within the programme, specifying if they want to specialise in one or two foreign languages (monolingual/bilingual option), based on the language(s) for which they are admitted. This will also determine the supplementary courses included in their study plan.
The programme is divided into three curricula: teaching and educational; linguistic, philological and literary for the digital era; editing and translation.
The first curriculum is addressed to students who aim to pursue a teaching career in modern languages and/or literatures. As for the monolingual path, the language options are French, English, German and Spanish. Students who enrol in the bilingual path must in any case include French, English, German or Spanish as one of their curricular languages. Graduates will be qualified to teach foreign languages and literature, plan teaching activities and evaluate students' learning outcomes and skills attained. This curriculum, jointly with the Bachelor's degree in Foreign languages and literature, allows students to earn the academic credits (CFU/ECTS credits) required to take part in the national public competition to access the teaching profession in their subject area of specialisation.
The second curriculum is addressed to students who want to acquire a robust knowledge of the state of the art of linguistic studies and literary criticism. In particular, students will develop an expertise that encompasses both critical and philological studies and the use of information technology. This will prepare students for a career in the production and dissemination of cultural contents in international settings, having a solid historical background.
The third curriculum aims to produce language and literary professionals who can work in the broad context of the Italian publishing industry. Students will acquire knowledge and skills related to literary translation (fiction and non-fiction) and the dissemination of editorial products in international contexts. Generally speaking, they will be able to work with documents and sources in more than one language.

Attendance is mandatory for in-person workshops, in order to earn the relevant credits. If contemplated by the course or workshop, attending students can be assessed through mid-course exams or other forms of continuous assessment, which can replace part of the end-of-course exam or contribute to the final mark. Further information for attending and non-attending students are available in the webpage of each course (https://lingue-lm.cdl.unimi.it/it/insegnamenti/elenco-insegnamenti-z).

For those who have a foreign degree, Italian proficiency at a B1 level or higher per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required for admission.
The B1-level requirement is ascertained by the University Language Centre (SLAM) during the admission process, as follows:
- Italian language certificate attesting to a B1 level or higher and issued no more than 3 years before the date of submission. For the list of language certificates recognised by the University, see: https://www.unimi.it/en/node/349. In this case, applicants must upload the certificate when completing their application for admission;
- Italian proficiency level achieved during a University of Milan degree programme and certified by the University Language Centre (SLAM). Only levels certified in the last four years are considered valid. In this case the process is automatic, the applicant does not have to attach any certificates to the application;
- entry test administered by the University Language Centre (SLAM) according to the calendar published on the website: https://www.unimi.it/en/node/349. Those who fail to submit a valid certificate or do not meet the required proficiency level will be instructed, during the admission procedure, to take the entry test.
Applicants who do not take or pass the entry test will be required to obtain a language certificate recognised by the University (https://www.unimi.it/en/node/349) and submit it to SLAM via https://www.unimi.it/it/studiare/servizi-gli-studenti/segreterie-informastudenti no later than the deadline set by the degree course (https://www.unimi.it/en/node/46371).
If the Italian language requisite has not been satisfied by said deadline, the applicant will not be admitted to the Master's programme and will not be able to sit for any further tests.
With regard to the admission process, qualifications will be assessed by an Admission Board qualifications to check if applicants meet the minimum curricular requirements. Those who fall within one of the categories listed below will be required to sit for an interview aimed at ascertaining the adequacy of their background knowledge:
- applicants who earned their Bachelor's degree with a final mark lower than 95/110, regardless of their degree class;
- applicants who earned their university degree 10 years before 31 December of the year in which they are supposed to enrol in this programme;
- applicants who completed their language and literature exams (as needed to meet the credit requirements for these subjects) 10 years before 31 December of the year in which they are supposed to enrol in this programme;
- applicants who hold a foreign qualification which is significantly different from Italian higher education qualifications.
Applicants who earned their degree with a final mark lower than 90/110 will see their application rejected.
Interviews can also be held online. Those who fail to provide a reason for not attending their interview will be considered to have withdrawn their application.
Applicants who fail to meet the minimum curricular requirements or do not pass the interview will not be allowed to enrol in the programme, even if they applied for a transfer from another Master's degree belonging to the class LM-37 or another degree class. They can enrol in single courses (https://www.unimi.it/en/study/single-courses) in order to meet the missing requirements. Only after fulfilling all the curricular requirements, will these applicants be admitted to the study programme, in accordance with the admission deadlines.
The Admission Board reserves the right to assess applicants whose educational and professional experiences are considered as "outdated", or whose learning pathway was not perfectly linear, provided that they demonstrate their preparedness for the programme. Therefore, notwithstanding the above requirements and following a careful assessment, the Board may decide to admit these applicants, in accordance with the recommendations included in Ministerial Decree no. 386 of 26 July 2007, Annex 1, point 3.e which state the possibility to admit "graduates with a high level of competence, even if they attended programmes which are not perfectly consistent with the admission requirements".
In the case of transfer from another degree programme or university, credits will be recognised solely for the courses included in this programme description or in the Academic Regulations of the degree programme.
Exceptions may apply in the case of substantiated teaching or scientific reasons, and credits may be recognised for activities which are not included in the course list of the degree programme, but belong to the same scientific disciplinary sectors. A maximum of 27 credits can be recognised for activities not included in the course list. An ad-hoc Commission will approve credit transfer on a case-by-case basis, so as to ensure consistency with the learning pathway. The general rule is that credits earned through completion of culture exams cannot be recognised for the corresponding literature exams included in the Academic Regulations of the degree programme, as the contents and methodologies of these disciplines are extremely different.
The courses of the Master's degree programme in Languages and Literature for Education, Criticism and Translation are worth 6 or 9 credits. Therefore, if the exams for which credit recognition is sought are worth more or less than 6 or 9 credits, the Commission can decide to round up or down and, if necessary, require students to fill any credit gaps through completion of one or more course modules.
For second-degree applications, a maximum of 36 credits can be recognised.
The career of students holding a foreign qualification will be assessed case-by-case. In the case of Bachelor's graduates who demonstrate a high level of competence, and applicants holding a qualification from a different higher education system, the Academic Board can decide to award more credits than the ones indicated above.
Pursuant to art. 5, paragraph 7 of Ministerial Decree 270/2004, a maximum of 3 credits can be awarded for certified professional knowledge and skills, provided that these competencies are consistent with the student's learning pathway.
Pursuant to art. 7, paragraph 10 of the University's Academic Regulations, the Academic Board of the Master's degree can declare that credits earned in the past have become obsolete. In this case, students will be required to sit for these exams again, or attest to the completion of other more recent activities.
Non-Italian mother tongue students must demonstrate a good command of the Italian language, as specified below.
Applicants who choose the bilingual path must meet the following curricular requirements:
